Bio

David Houghton David Houghton is a photographer and artist. His work deals with the themes of transience, imperfection and time’s passing, inspired by the Japanese philosophies of Mono No Aware and Wabi Sabi. Influenced by the photography of Bernd and Hilla Becher, paintings of Agnes Martin and films of Yasujirō Ozu, he often utilises grids and interval techniques similar to time-lapse photography. Much of his canon combines multiple photographs to create a single image which, when viewed in its entirety, takes on a whole new collective ambience to its constituent parts. In 2019 he was one of the winners in the LensCulture Art Photography Awards 2019, coming 2nd in the single image category, with On the way to Shimoda. Although based in the historic UK city of Cambridge, much of his source material is derived from his trips to Japan – a compelling influence on his creations.
