Joachim van der Vlugt
Painter
Bio
Joachim van der Vlugt, a Dutch painter living in Luxembourg, creates a resolutely contemporary painting style while drawing inspiration from the classical Dutch masters. He revisits and mixes the two traditional registers of landscape and portrait.
Having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht, Joachim van der Vlugt, after trying his hand at fashion design, devoted himself completely and definitively to painting. In love with the great masters of Flemish painting, he fully assumes their influence. Using a deliberately small and dark colour palette of black and white, brown, beige and blue, Joachim van der Vlugt con-stantly layers paint, allowing him to work with light, its nuances and intensity, and to delicately bring out vaporous images and figures. Without stopping, he continues to compose his paint-ings by multiplying the layers, accentuating certain areas but also integrating geometric shapes or almost transparent drops that refine the composition of his paintings until he achieves, as he likes to call it, an orchestrated chaos. This cultured painting with its multiple references has a spiritual and almost esoteric dimension. The artist likes to introduce hidden and almost invisible images into the underlying layers of his paintings. It is therefore a work that is discovered as one goes along, before which the viewer's gaze is constantly renewed.
Joachim van der Vlugt has been exhibiting his works for twenty years, mainly in Europe, through Luxembourgish, Dutch and German galleries, as well as at various contemporary art fairs.
