Kang Sang-hee

Mixed Media Artist

Bio

Kang Sang-hee was born in Iksan, Jeollabukdo, South Korea. Where she lived, there was a river, and she could experience the three-dimensional world of water, light, and plants. Kang Sang-hee draws light and color that reacts with water and a fantastic space into a three-dimensional metal mesh. Kang Sang-hee's sculpture is a sculpture in which the double and triple worlds work organically and change multifacetedly as another pictorial screen unfolds under one screen. It is realized by coloring, cutting, overlapping and stitching a thin metal mesh. Kang Sang-hee make faces and spaces with countless stitches and struggle to meet a single scene. A certain image is gradually formed through the aggregation and dispersion of the formative cells. What Sanghee Kang pursues as the source of her work is the world of water that connects the past, present, and future, life and death, consciousness and unconsciousness, and the small world and the huge world. It unfolds in a three-dimensional space on a metal mesh and returns to a two-dimensional space. Her sculptures make our brain respond in her own way to space, flatness, and color as our gaze moves. It creates a scene like a ghost cell that appears for a while and then disappears depending on the surrounding environment. Kang Sang-hee patented the Ghostcell name and manufacturing technique in 2020. We are in the process of obtaining another type of patent related to manufacturing materials and techniques.

My sculptural landscapes are fragments of memories and illusions formed at the intersection of time and space. Based on a transparent metal mesh, architectural layers are linked together to become a three-dimensional world in itself. Pieces of the past, present, and future, conscious-ness and unconsciousness, anxiety, life and death, and from the small world to the big world are connected across planes and dimensions to form a visual organism.
I realized that only bold and creative destruction that surpasses me can overcome the limitations of material and image expression and open a new world. At the same time, creation must not be satisfied with itself and must have the courage to constantly destroy itself for new creation.
