Art criticism by curator Mara Cipriano
O’ Friends transcends the earthly dimension, as Chan introduces imaginary and spiritual figures. Works like Knock, Knock..., I Come in Peace, Kool Cat, and Care for a Dance bring to life “disembodied souls” from other dimensions, portrayed by Chan as if they were old friends. Chan uses these works to explore the mystery of existence and our place in the universe. The supernatural here is not depicted as something frightening or alien but as a natural part of the human experience, a parallel world we can interact with if we open ourselves to new perspectives. The works are characterized by an enigmatic atmosphere, enveloped in abstract symbolism that challenges the perception of reality. The message of the series seems to invite the audience to reflect on invisible connections and the possibility that the past and present intertwine in unexpected ways. Some scientific studies have shown that reality, as we perceive it, is an illusion, and that part of a force or energy coexists with us but currently eludes our five senses. Strong emotions must guide us on this journey, as in Scream, with dark colors and jagged lines, this work expresses universal pain. It is a powerful representation of human emotions in their rawness. The more serene tones in Have We Met? finally close the circle with a reflection on the cyclic nature of lives and connections. The title suggests a recognition between the viewer and the supernatural presence, as if there were a shared story across different dimensions, repeating through time and space.
